Ep9: Rethinking How We Address Bullying

In this episode of “Body Talk” Dr. Traci L. Scheepstra addresses National Bullying Prevention Month and the bullying discourse that is commonly supported in schools. She draws on her doctoral research, on school-related gender-based violence, to disrupt these normative ways of thinking. She argues that by looking at unhealthy relationships through a simplistic bullying lens rarely allows us to see the root of the problem. She suggests that we must look at the social and relational problems in schools through an intersectional lens so we can see how gender, race, class, and other social identifications play a role in “bullying” incidents. Dr. Scheepstra makes connections to the body and how the arts provide a powerful vehicle for exploring topics of discrimination and oppression with students.
